Envios~! The story is about an education class in a public school in Mexico. This one of the most notorious schools in the country because it is known for its roach-infested classrooms, leaky roofs, and lack of functioning toilets. It would take days to fix all these problems and years to replace or repave them. There is no sewer system nor any lighting; instead they use candles and brasiers (rustic fireplaces). The students in this school were mainly indigenous people but also included some migrants from Central America and Africa. Envios~! offers a unique perspective on the education that goes on here with their description: "We will not just give you knowledge, we will help transform your life. We will help you change the world. The Envios~! Education Foundation is a non-profit organization that has been working for more than four years in collaboration with the Mexican government and municipal authorities to transform educational systems and fight against poverty and inequality." Envios~! offers a unique insight into what goes on inside Classroom 8 of FSL23 School in Tijuana, Mexico. The idea for Envios~! began when Daniel Levy, an American who went to teach Spanish in Mexico, returned to the United States. He was shocked by his students' dedication and their lack of opportunity. Levy was intrigued by these students' dreams for their futures and decided to document their lives through video cameras provided by his employer Microsoft. The film takes a unique approach to understanding the students from a first person perspective, through the camera of Levy himself. While he offers insight into each student's personality by watching their interactions and behavior, he also offers a unique viewpoint into the education system in this country. The film highlights the teacher that is shown to be most dedicated to their students, Mr. Hernández, through his interactions with all of his students. He spends almost every class period talking to them about life in America and teaching them how to speak English. The film shows how after years of living in poverty, these students are still very optimistic about their futures and hopeful about their future prospects in this country or anywhere else for that matter. The original version of Envios~! has been shown in many film festivals and has won a number of awards. In addition, a short version of the film was made that focuses on one student in particular, Juan José Mendoza. This short, called "Envios~! The Story of Juan José," was distributed by MoveOn.org and played in theaters across the country. In addition to this award-winning project, Envios~! also created a website to connect college students with these students from FSL23 School from around the world. In January 2009, Envios~! released a new version of their film. This new version, called "Envios~! The Story of the World," focuses on global stories of resistance to poverty and inequality, in places across the world. This new version of Envios~! is available free to view on their website (www.envios.tv) and is also currently airing on PBS stations across the country. Since 2005, Envios~! has received an annual award from Tiawatha Institute for making a difference in the lives of children everywhere.
